Its been asked of my hip-hop artist husband, Nimo, if females really like hardcore, street, gutter hip-hop music. Since he’s soon to be highly recognized in the hip-hop industry he was really wanting to know what the ladies really like and don’t like.
Being the strong and independent woman that I am I told him that I do like the hip hop songs that have been toned down by male artists to be more suitable for women, however I much rather prefer to hear the gutter, streets, thugging type of music. And correct me if I’m wrong, but those types of artists include, my southside of Chicago raised husband, Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie, Tupac, Kendrick Lamar, Common and sometimes J. Cole. And of course lets not forget Kanye West, who doesn’t come off hardcore but just speaks his mid through his lyrics and gets straight to the point with his controversial opinions.
I don’t like to feel that an artist intentionally toned down his song for it to hit the radio as the summer single to be heard because that’s what the ladies would want. Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean I don’t like to feel like a G, aka gangsta. Just look at the way Beyonce’ interacts with Jay. I’m sure she tells him that she loves all the street vernacular that he spits on his albums. So, yes we females do like “True” hip-hop music.
